Mateya Safari Lodge/Madikwe Hills: Guest can sponsor and participate in Rhino notching

Mateya Safari Lodge and Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge, as well as some other lodges in the Madikwe Game Reserve, can organize Nature Conservation activities such as supporting the Rhino Notching. Guests can financially sponsor and actively help to capture rhinos for individual ear notching and the implanting of microchips in the horns, to track the movement of the animal. This is extremely important in tje fight against poaching, to be able to monitor the Rhinos in the park.

What is Notching? Rhino Notching is a form of unique identification. The rhino is tranquilized and during the veterinary procedure a DNA sample is taken and provided to the rhodis database for identification. A microchip is inserted into their horn and their ears are notched so that they are readily identifiable to park rangers and movements of the animals can be monitored.

Guests are encouraged to actively get involved and to sponsor the complex process, with Helicopter, Vets and many volunteering game rangers from various lodges in the reserve. The activity normally lasts for about 1-2 hour, depending on how quickly the rangers can find an un-notched rhino on the day.
